Website subscriptions are still relatively new in the UK. Most people are used to the traditional model: pay a few thousand upfront, get a website, then figure out hosting and maintenance separately.
We've been offering subscription websites at Zanacco Digital for a while now, and I want to give you a genuinely honest breakdown of what you get, what you don't, and whether it's the right choice for your business.
What a Website Subscription Actually Includes
At least with us (I can't speak for every provider), here's what's included in the monthly fee:
- Website design and build: Your site is designed and built from scratch. No upfront cost.
- Hosting: Your site is hosted on reliable servers. You don't need to buy hosting separately.
- Domain: We register your domain or connect your existing one. Included in the fee.
- SSL certificate: The padlock icon in the browser. Essential for trust and SEO. Included.
- Ongoing changes: Need to update your phone number? Change an image? Add a paragraph? We do it for you, included in your plan.
- Technical maintenance: Security updates, performance monitoring, uptime checks. All handled.
The amount of changes and the turnaround time depends on your plan tier. Our Starter (£49/month) includes 1 change per month with 72-hour turnaround. Growth (£99/month) includes 2 changes with 24-48 hour turnaround. Premium (£149/month) includes fair-use changes with same-day priority support.
What You Don't Get
Transparency is important, so here's what a subscription typically doesn't include:
- Ownership (initially): While you're subscribed, we host and manage the site. If you cancel, you don't automatically keep the website. However, we offer buyout options and we never hold your content hostage. This is the biggest difference from a one-off build.
- Unlimited changes: Each plan has a change allowance. Small tweaks are included. Major redesigns or new features are billed separately or require a plan upgrade.
- Advanced SEO campaigns: Basic SEO (clean code, meta tags, fast loading) is included. Ongoing SEO work (keyword research, link building, content campaigns) is an add-on starting at £199/month.
Who Website Subscriptions Are Perfect For
Based on our client base, subscription websites work brilliantly for:
- New businesses: You're just starting out and can't justify £3,000-£5,000 on a website. £49-£149/month is manageable and gets you online immediately.
- Small businesses with 1-15 employees: You need a professional presence but don't have (or want) a marketing team managing your website.
- Service businesses: Tradespeople, consultants, agencies, care providers, cleaning companies — anyone who needs a clean, professional site that generates enquiries.
- Businesses that want to focus on their actual work: You don't want to worry about hosting, updates, or maintenance. You want to focus on what you do best.
Who Shouldn't Use a Subscription
It's not for everyone:
- E-commerce businesses with large catalogues: If you're selling 500+ products, you need a dedicated e-commerce platform. A subscription model isn't built for that.
- Businesses that need constant daily changes: If you're updating your site multiple times a day, you need a CMS you manage yourself or a dedicated in-house team.
- Companies with very specific technical requirements: Complex web apps, customer portals, or heavily integrated systems need custom project scoping, not a monthly plan.
Cost Comparison: Subscription vs Freelancer vs Agency
Let me put real numbers to this.
Hiring a freelancer (one-off):
- Build cost: £1,500-£3,000
- Hosting: £100-£300/year
- Domain: £10-£50/year
- Maintenance: £0 (unless you pay extra — typically £50-£150/month)
- Changes: £50-£100/hour
- Year 1 total: £1,700-£5,000+
Traditional agency (one-off):
- Build cost: £3,000-£10,000
- Hosting: £200-£500/year
- Domain: included or £20-£50/year
- Maintenance: £100-£300/month
- Changes: £75-£150/hour
- Year 1 total: £4,500-£14,000+
Zanacco Digital subscription:
- Build cost: £0
- Monthly fee: £49-£149 (includes everything)
- Year 1 total: £588-£1,788
The maths speaks for itself. Even at our Premium tier, you're paying less in year one than most freelancers charge just for the build.
The Real Question
The real question isn't whether a website subscription is worth it. It's whether you can afford not to have a professional website.
If you're a business operating without a website in 2026, you're invisible to anyone who searches for your service on Google. You're losing credibility with potential customers who check your website before calling. You're leaving money on the table.
A subscription removes every barrier. No upfront cost. No technical hassle. No ongoing headaches. Just a professional website that works for your business, managed by people who know what they're doing.
